In general, letters are sent out to students living in the residence halls about three weeks prior to move in day confirming the name of their roommate.

Also, at the time you apply to live in the residence halls you may request a specific roommate if you have a friend in mind.  If two people request each other, it is very likely they will become roommates, but it is not guaranteed. Residence Life really does their best to accommodate all roommate requests.

The best way to increase your chances of getting your desired roommate is to:
1). Make sure both individuals have requested the other on the application
2). Hand the application in by the required deadline (deadlines vary depending on which semester you are interested in).

Members of the same sports team do tend to room together for the first year but this may be because they do not know other students coming to the school.  If you do however request to live with someone who is not on the team, Residence Life will do its best to meet that request.
