Re: applying?

Hey there!

My name is Danielle Cino and I am currently a senior in the SLP program. (I know it probably says that this is an admissions counselor replying, but I am just using their email temporarily).  Personally, I love the program.  The set up of the classes really makes the transition from high school to college a breeze.  In your freshmen year, you will take one introductory course in the major that gives you a general idea of what you will be learning in your later years.  I found this class really enjoyable and a good mix to all the other core classes I was taking.  As your semesters go on, the number of core classes decrease and the number of major related classes increase, so it is not too overwhelming.

If you are interested, over the summer there is a Speech Exploration Summer Camp.  I was a counselor last summer, and I really enjoyed being a part of it, and I believe that the campers enjoy their time here and learned a lot as well.  You might also want to attend an open house, plan a tour of campus, or stay for an overnight visit.

As for con's to the school, I haven't found too many, just kidding, it all really depends on your personality.  I am from Long Island originally and my graduating high school class was over 500 students, where here my year is about 300.  Some people would not like a smaller school, however, this fits me really well.  I have been able to make a lot of friends, get involved in different clubs and activities on campus, and I feel as if I have made really great relationships with all my professors and that they know who I am and truly care that we all succeed as students.

For the admissions process, the major requires (I believe) a minimum SAT score of 1000, a 3.0 GPA, two letters of recommendation, a 500 word essay of why you are interested in the major, and a B or higher in classes such as Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.  For a more detailed look at the admissions process, I would recommend calling your admissions counselor or contacting the speech department.

I really hope this helps!! If you have any further questions, you can post them here or feel free to email me at cinod@misericordia.edu.

-Danielle :)
