computers

I was recently accepted into the Occupational Therapy program and I am planning to attend Misericordia in fall 2009. I was wondering if there were any specifications on features that are needed before I purchase my computer. Do I need to have certain cables or other things in order for my computer to work properly? Also, how easy is it to access printers on campus or would I need to have my own?

Re: computers

Hey, congrats on getting into OT! That's my major too and I love it. As far as your questions go:

There are no specifications on different programs you will need for your computer. Anything you put on it would be solely for your own use, so whatever programs you feel you will need would be good to add. However, I would personally recommend putting Microsoft Office, or another program like that, onto your computer because with OT (and many of the other majors) you will need to have frequent access to Microsoft Word and Powerpoint programs. The school provides students with a very secure anti-virus system too, so you don't have to worry about installing that either.

You will definitely need to bring an ethernet cable or wireless card with you to gain internet access while you're in the dorms. There are different places on campus that are wireless, and we do hope to have the whole campus converted to wireless soon, but as of right now there is no set date for when that will happen. Therefore, bringing either the ethernet cable or wireless card is a must, but besides that and your power cord, there isn't any other cable you need to have for your computer to work properly.

Accessing printers on campus is really easy. We have computer labs in the Library, the Hafey-McCormick Science Building, and Mercy Hall. All of them have printers for students to use at no cost, and they are all open relatively late too. I didn't bring a printer with me during my freshman year, and I had no problem at all. For my sophmore and junior years I did bring a printer, but that was simply for convenience purposes. You definitely don't need to bring a printer with you to campus, and you should have no problem accessing the ones that are here.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with, or if you have any other questions! OT is a great program, and you'll definitely be happy here!

Re: computers

Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it, and I cannot wait to attend next fall!

Another question I have is concerning the dorms.  Are they furnished with items like mini-fridges and microwaves or are those only available in the common area?  If they aren't in the dorm rooms themselves, would I be able to bring my own to use or is that not allowed?

Re: computers

You're welcome in regards to the first post. As far as these questions go:

The dorm rooms do not come with microwaves or minifridges. However, we do offer an option for students to rent microfridges. A microfridge is a combination of a microwave and a fridge/freezer. The items are attached together, and students are able to rent them at a low cost for the duration of the school year. Provided you keep them in good shape and there is no damage to the equiptment, you return them at the end of the year. However, if there is damage you may be asked to pay a fine.

If the option of renting a microfridge doesn't appeal to you, you can most definitely bring your own microwave and minifridge. Make sure it is a MINIfridge though, because a handful of students have tried to bring large fridges into the dorms, and the residents life office does not allow that.
